Tensions

A group of residents blocked the main access road to Caraballeda this Saturday, one of the epicenters of the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude double earthquake, to pressure the government to relocate them, as they were promised, to the Las Caracas hotel complex, located several kilometers from the area.

Other families complain that fewer vehicles are delivering food while they continue to wait for the recovery of their relatives’ bodies, as there are now fewer rescuers left in the country.

The death toll rose to 2,954, while the number of injured increased to 16,592, as reported by the President of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez.

Infrastructure assessment

The Venezuelan government is trying to accelerate debris removal work and is assessing the damage caused to infrastructure following the double earthquake.

In La Guaira, asphalt paving and bridge recovery work continued, as well as the evaluation of other road infrastructure projects, as reported by the Minister of Transport, Jacqueline Farías.

Connectivity

The telephone companies Digitel and Movistar Venezuela are working to restore connectivity in La Guaira with the help of Starlink, as well as by enabling free Wi-Fi connection points in shelters in the coastal region.

Digitel reported in a press release that it has been able to recover 88.9% of its infrastructure in the region, while Movistar reports 70.2%.

Decoration and farewell

Rodríguez decorated and bid farewell to rescuers from seven countries, who join the rescue groups from nearly twenty nations that on Friday received the Heroes of Venezuela distinction for their work following the recent earthquakes.

Hernán Gil, the security guard who was rescued after being buried under the rubble for eight days following the earthquakes, called on rescuers to continue the search for people who, like him, are “clinging to life,” even though ten days have passed since the disaster.

Follow the humanitarian aid

The Dominican Government and the airline Aerojet arranged a humanitarian flight to Venezuela, which transported a mobile hospital, medicines, and essential supplies, aimed at strengthening the response capacity of the Venezuelan authorities in the areas impacted by the disaster.

Brazil sent six tons of vaccines, medicines, and medical supplies on its sixth humanitarian aid flight to assist the victims of the earthquake.

Spanish cooperation begins

The field hospital set up by Spanish cooperation began operating this Saturday in a Caracas park, with outpatient capacity to provide basic healthcare and emergency care without hospitalization, operating self-sufficiently, with its own power and water.

This operation, by the START group (Spanish Technical Aid and Emergency Response Team), will be operational for one month to assist the affected population and anyone in need of any medical attention, and it has the capacity for up to 200 patients per day.
