Washington.-<\/strong> Millions of people in the United States<\/strong> remain under high-temperature alerts this Sunday and at risk from intense rain and severe storms, after bad weather dampened Independence Day celebrations the day before and forced the modification or cancellation of events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“High temperatures are expected again today in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and lower Mississippi Valley regions. Heat advisories have been issued,” reported the National Weather Service (NWS).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

According to the agency, this Sunday’s storms<\/strong> “could bring heavy to torrential rain from parts of the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic regions, which may cause flooding in some areas,” so extreme vigilance is recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Severe storms pose a risk of damaging wind gusts in the Mid-Atlantic region today,” the NWS added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

An extreme heat wave and stifling humidity have affected 70% of the United States this weekend, complicating the celebration of events for the 250th anniversary of Independence, this July 4th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, which hosted many of the holiday’s biggest events, recorded record temperatures of 38 and 39 degrees Celsius, with an even higher heat index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with the risk, authorities in Philadelphia and Washington canceled the traditional parades for the date, one of the most important in the North American country’s calendar and among the busiest holiday weekends. The celebration program in a large part of the territory had to be modified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evacuations due to storm threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the capital, severe thunderstorm and lightning alerts forced the evacuation of the Great American State Fair, the FIFA Fan Zone, and the venue where hundreds were awaiting President Donald Trump’s speech on the National Mall for about two hours on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the confusion of an audience that had to seek shelter in nearby buildings and then go through security screenings again to re-enter the area, Trump spoke near midnight, an hour later than scheduled on a stage set up near the George Washington Monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His political rally<\/strong>-style speech was followed by a historic fireworks display, the largest in the capital’s history and one with which the Administration hopes to break a world record. According to the organizers, some 850,000 pyrotechnic projectiles were fired during the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington and areas of the nearby states of Maryland and Virginia are under alert due to poor air quality and the presence of pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to internal National Park Service documents reviewed by The Washington Post, amid heat and high humidity levels, smoke and particulate matter from fireworks were expected to cause dangerous levels of pollution and “very unhealthy” conditions in the capital area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
