Kinshasa.-<\/em><\/strong> At least 54 civilians were killed over the weekend due to heavy fighting between the Army<\/a> of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the rebel March 23 Movement (M23) in the Fizi territory, in the eastern province of South Kivu, local authorities confirmed to EFE on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have already counted 54 deaths among the civilian population, including pregnant women, students, children, and internally displaced persons,” declared the civil administrator of the Fizi territory, Samy Kalonji Badibanga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the fighting, which resumed two weeks ago but intensified over the weekend, authorities have recorded the destruction of roads, health centers, livestock, and crop fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kalonji Badibanga also said that the deterioration of the security situation has caused significant population displacement, with people forced to move to neighboring villages such as Mukera, Lumania, Kichula, Kananda, and Barsebele, as well as the city of Baraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We call on the international community to understand that the situation facing the population of South Kivu in general, and that of the Fizi territory in particular, is dramatic,”<\/em><\/strong> he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, he condemned the “continuous drone bombings,”<\/em><\/strong> which are part of the clashes between the Congolese Army and the M23, supported by neighboring Rwanda, in that area of South Kivu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict escalated at the end of January 2025, when the M23 took control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, and weeks later, the city of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, following fighting with the Congolese Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the Congolese president, F\u00e9lix Tshisekedi, and the Rwandan president, Paul Kagame, signed a peace agreement on December 4th in Washington in the presence of their American counterpart, Donald Trump, which ratified the June 2025 pact (signed at the ministerial level), both parties have accused each other of violating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That agreement adds to the mediation efforts sponsored by Qatar between the Congolese government and the M23, which signed a framework agreement in Doha on November 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The east of the African country, rich in minerals essential for the technology industry, has been experiencing a conflict since the nineties fueled by rebel groups and the Army, despite the deployment of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (Monusco).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
