America Editorial.- <\/strong>The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that shook the northern area of Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, have left extensive damage to homes, economic assets, businesses, and other types of structures, as well as human losses that are still being counted as rescue and debris removal efforts continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.- Deceased and injured<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The number of deaths<\/a> increased in the latest report to 3,342, while the number of injured rose to 16,740, the vast majority in La Guaira state, the most devastated in the country by this disaster, reported the president of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodr\u00edguez, in a report in which he did not provide a figure for the missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the latest data from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the earthquakes have already left 35 Spanish citizens dead, while another 140 remain missing and 11 were located under the rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government of Portugal, for its part, confirmed that the number of Portuguese citizens dead has risen to 95, including 17 minors, while another 58 remain missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The citizen initiative \u2018Venezuela Earthquake Missing\u2019, a website for people to report their relatives whose whereabouts are unknown, has so far registered more than 31,000 people who have not been able to be contacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.- Rescue teams<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Currently, 29,567 members of the Army and security forces are deployed at ground zero, while a total of 27,482 volunteers are collaborating in the necessary tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The watchman Hern\u00e1n Gil, who was rescued on July 2nd after eight days under the rubble, was the last of the 14 people that the international teams have managed to save, which have already begun their withdrawal phase from the country, according to the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consequently, in the collapsed buildings of La Guaira there are no longer large groups and almost everyone who remains are Venezuelans -especially volunteers and relatives-, who continue searching and lifting the rubble to look for the hundreds of people who are presumed to still be buried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.- Replicas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Following the two major earthquakes on June 24, Venezuela has recorded 995 aftershocks, according to government information.
The Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis) reported more than a dozen earthquakes in the last 24 hours, with magnitudes ranging between 3.2 and 2.5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.- Humanitarian aid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the United Nations, 25 of the 77 international teams that arrived from 31 countries remain operational, while the coordination of tasks has already been handed over to the Venezuelan Civil Protection team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government estimated at 4,088 the number of international rescuers who remain in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in neighboring Colombia deployed a field hospital to bolster medical care, and according to Admiral Ricardo Hurtado, deputy director for Disaster Management, the mission coordinated by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) “will operate for two and a half months.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new group of brigade members also departed from Argentina to complete the relief of the search and rescue teams that have been working in the areas affected by the earthquakes for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, two Mexican Navy vessels set sail from the state of Veracruz with 2,003 cubic meters of humanitarian aid, reported the Secretariats of the Navy (Semar) and Foreign Affairs (SRE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the mayor of Panama, Mayer Mizrachi, stated to EFE that he is tracking the location of the humanitarian aid sent to Venezuela in order to be accountable to the citizens who donated it in a “massive effort,” after the last plane departed on Saturday, “with 16 tons” of essential goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.- Damages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jorge Rodr\u00edguez indicated that the number of affected buildings remains at 856 and 190 collapsed. According to official figures, more than 17,300 people were left homeless, of which 10,702 are housed in 79 temporary camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Groups of affected people have been displaced from La Guaira to other regions that did not suffer considerable damage, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) told EFE this Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
