Brussels.-<\/em><\/strong> Six minors, students at a school in the town of Hasselt, in eastern Belgium, were arrested in mid-June as suspects for threatening from a closed TikTok <\/a>group to set fire to the school and attack it with chemical substances, the local police force reported this Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alert came from the school’s own management, which detected the group and reported the messages to the Limburg public prosecutor’s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to threats against the center and its directors, the messages made reference to “school shootings, extremist groups, and violent episodes in history,”<\/em><\/strong> according to the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigators, with the collaboration of several internet service providers, identified the six minors, all students at the school, and detained them on suspicion of “making a threat of an attack.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal, according to the authorities, was to prevent “the school from being the victim of an attack a few days later.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six minors appeared before the juvenile judges of Hasselt and neighboring Tongeren, both in the province of Limburg, and the investigation remains open under the direction of the local prosecutor’s office, now in charge of the juvenile crime unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the corps, Philip Pirard, explained that the prosecutor’s office processed the necessary requirements and arrest warrants “with great speed,” which allowed them to act in less than 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thanks to the effective collaboration between the different services and organizations, we were able to identify and arrest the suspects in less than 24 hours,” he summarized, asking young people to “be aware of which online groups they join” and to immediately report any message that crosses the line of what is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
