Santo Domingo.\u2013 <\/strong>Former Senator of the Republic and former Vice President of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD)<\/a>, Yv\u00e1n Lorenzo, stated this Monday that the Government must take responsibility for the increase in deaths occurring during National Police interventions and demanded that the Public Prosecutor’s Office act with greater firmness regarding these cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While participating in the PLD’s weekly press conference, Lorenzo asserted that President Luis Abinader receives weekly reports on individuals who have died in police operations and maintained that this situation requires concrete responses from the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, she urged the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, to assume her institutional responsibility and investigate the deaths recorded during police interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLamentations are not enough. We reiterate that extrajudicial executions must cease, because that is what judicial processes exist for,\u201d stated the political leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorenzo clarified that he recognizes the role of the National Police in preserving citizen security and their authority to conduct inspections and verifications when circumstances warrant it. However, he maintained that these powers do not justify, in his view, the excessive use of force that ends the lives of citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former legislator assured that since January of this year, the PLD has been warning about the increase in deaths during police actions and stated that, according to records cited by that political organization, the number of deceased is around 150 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, he reiterated the call for an end to so-called extrajudicial executions and requested that the cases be heard through the mechanisms established by the justice system, considering that it is up to the courts to determine criminal liability and not police actions that end in the death of those involved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
