Santo Domingo.<\/strong> The secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Johnny Pujols, stated that the Dominican political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential elections could reproduce conditions similar to those of the 1996 elections and maintained that there is a possibility that the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) may not qualify for an eventual runoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The PLD leader asserted that the electoral landscape is marked by the consolidation of three major political forces, which, in his view, makes it increasingly difficult for a single party to reach the Presidency in the first round and opens the possibility of a change in the order of the country’s main political forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Pujols offered these statements during an interview on El Avance Radio, which airs Monday through Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning on the 100.1 FM station, hosted by journalists Carlos Del Pozo, Yulissa Reyes, Mart\u00edn Severino, Patricia Dipr\u00e9, and V\u00edctor Herazme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have to look at the 1996 election because it is going to be something very similar,” Pujols expressed when analyzing the 2028 electoral scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


When asked about that historical comparison, he added that “there is a possibility that the ruling party could end up in third place,” although he clarified that his reference does not refer to the political actors of that era, but rather to the dynamic that a scenario with three major competitors could produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


During the interview, the PLD secretary general also ruled out any possibility of a political alliance with the Modern Revolutionary Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“That possibility does not exist. We have never been allies of the PRM,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


He explained that his organization’s strategy consists of strengthening its own political project and building the alliances it deems appropriate, but always around a PLD presidential candidacy.
“The PLD has never gone into an electoral process without presenting a presidential candidate and it will be no different now,” he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Relationship with the United States<\/h3>\n\n\n\n


When addressing the recent meetings between PLD leaders and representatives of the United States Government, Pujols maintained that the relationship between both parties responds to a policy of institutional dialogue that the U.S. Embassy develops with different national sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Likewise, he considered that in recent years erroneous interpretations have been constructed regarding the political events that occurred in 2019 and defended the strengthening of relations between the PLD and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


He also positively valued the work carried out by the U.S. ambassador in the country, highlighting her positions on the defense of freedom of expression, civil liberties, and institutional strengthening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Judicialization of politics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Pujols reiterated that the PLD maintains the position that several judicial processes initiated against former officials of that organization have been politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


In that sense, he asserted that the appeal filed against the no-grounds decision that favored Gonzalo Castillo is part of that strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“We do not believe that in the midst of a totally politicized process a political decision can affect the PLD,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Likewise, he questioned what he described as selective action by the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding cases reported during the current administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Freedom of expression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Regarding the discussions surrounding the new Penal Code, the political leader expressed concern about the provisions related to opinion-based crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


He stated that imposing prison sentences for public expressions represents a setback for democracy and could lead to self-censorship.
