A Nepalese family that lost several members to attacks by a wild elephant<\/strong> \u2014Dhurbe\u2014 continues to be haunted by the animal 14 years later, reports The Kathmandu Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local resident, Shanichara Bote, recounted that, in 2012, the huge animal trampled his parents<\/strong> to death at a bazaar in Madi municipality. After that tragedy, the man left his entire life behind to escape the constant threat of wildlife encroachment. However, last Sunday, Dhurbe broke into the family’s new home<\/strong>. Shanichara’s daughter-in-law, 25-year-old Ashika Bote, and his 4-year-old grandson, Bharat, died in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We originally lived in Dropatinagar, in the Madi area, but the constant terror of wild elephants forced us to sell what we had and migrate to Jagatpur,” he told the media. “We believed that crossing the main rivers would keep us safe. But after so many years, the same elephant found us again, raided our house, and took my daughter-in-law and my little grandson<\/strong>. We have nowhere left to flee,” he detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“During the night, I felt as if something was hitting the wall. When I went out to look, I saw the elephant,” the man recalled, noting that “the mud walls collapsed instantly” and adding that his daughter-in-law came out with her grandson in her arms, but the elephant intercepted them. Mangali, Shanichara’s wife, managed to scare the animal away by setting fire to the dry straw on her porch<\/strong>, which accidentally set their house on fire, but saved the other members of the family. After the attack, outraged neighbors blocked a bridge over the Rapti River to protest against the authorities’ negligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dhurbe’s history of violence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dhurbe’s history of violence is well-documented in the records of Chitwan National Park, the country’s first protected area. Conservationists explain that when young elephants reach maturity, dominant males aggressively drive them away from their maternal herds, forcing them into a solitary and frequently hostile existence. Dhurbe followed this behavioral pattern exactly, becoming a lone wanderer who increasingly viewed human settlements as feeding grounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to official park records, the elephant began attacking human settlements and causing fatalities in 2010<\/strong>. Since then, it has been directly responsible for the deaths of at least 25 people throughout the area<\/strong>. Among its numerous victims are two soldiers who were serving in the fight against poaching and in park security tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the death of Shanichara’s parents, a formal executive order was issued to locate and cull the elephant<\/strong>. Subsequently, an intense two-week search was carried out by military personnel and conservationists in the dense forests of Chitwan. Park authorities and the Army fired at the animal on two separate occasions in late December 2012, wounding it severely. However, the elephant managed to escape into the jungle<\/strong> and, in 2019, expanded its territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the authorities managed to fit the animal with tracking collars from the beginning, local communities argue that the tracking system has dangerous operational deficiencies<\/strong>. “This animal follows a natural cycle and returns to the villages every year, which means its presence was totally predictable for the park authorities,” said a local resident. Meanwhile, the park has committed to permanently confining Dhurbe within the Sukhibhar forest sector and has promised to improve its infrastructure with real-time satellite tracking collars to prevent future casualties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
