The event, which occurred at 12:11 p.m., had a depth of 22 kilometers<\/strong> and was felt in several provinces of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Ovsicori-UNA<\/strong> reported that the epicenter was located 28 kilometers southwest of Jac\u00f3<\/strong>, in an area where the Cocos plate interacts with the Caribbean plate, a phenomenon associated with the subduction process in the Costa Rican Pacific. According to the director of the Observatory, Esteban Chaves<\/strong>, the seismic activity is consistent with the region’s usual tectonic dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The specialist explained that the earthquake was caused by the friction between tectonic plates and that, as of 1:40 p.m., twenty-one aftershocks<\/strong> of low magnitude had been recorded, all below 2.5. \u201cThese aftershocks are absolutely normal due to the process of energy release and the breaking of small asperities that did not break during the main earthquake\u201d<\/strong>, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
