Santo Domingo<\/strong>.- The Ministry of Health<\/strong> delivered two new GeneXpert machines<\/strong> to the National Health Service (SNS), as part of the national strategy to expand access to molecular diagnosis of tuberculosis<\/strong> and strengthen the response<\/strong> to this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delivery was led by the Minister of Health, V\u00edctor Atallah<\/strong>, together with the Vice Ministry of Collective Health, the Population Health Directorate, the Department of Prevention of Communicable Diseases, and the National Tuberculosis Control and Elimination Program (PNCT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The equipment, acquired through an investment of RD 3,377,100.00<\/strong>, brings the total<\/strong> number of GeneXpert units available in the Public Health Services Network to 36<\/strong>, expanding the coverage of molecular diagnostics, reducing detection times, and promoting the timely initiation of treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to data from the National Tuberculosis Control and Elimination Program<\/strong> (PNCT), during 2025, 4,447 cases of tuberculosis<\/strong> were reported in the Dominican Republic, of which 855 corresponded to people with TB\/HIV coinfection. Likewise, a mortality rate of 0.6 per 100,000 inhabitants<\/strong> was recorded, which reaffirms the importance of continuing to strengthen surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment<\/strong> actions for this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister V\u00edctor Atallah highlighted that the incorporation of this equipment strengthens the national response<\/strong> to tuberculosis and contributes to guaranteeing universal access to quality prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up<\/strong> services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur goal is clear: to guarantee universal access to quality prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up services, moving firmly toward a future where no person has to fall ill or lose their life due to a disease that we now know how to prevent, diagnose, and cure,\u201d<\/em> he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he pointed out that each new piece of equipment represents an opportunity to detect the disease earlier<\/strong>, initiate treatment in a timely manner, and bring high-precision diagnostic technologies to the population<\/strong>, regardless of their place of residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the director of the National Health Service, Julio Landr\u00f3n<\/strong>, highlighted that the institution has strengthened the national response to tuberculosis by expanding the diagnostic capacity of the Public Network, reaching coverage of over 92% of the program<\/strong> through 1,523 health facilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he pointed out that in 2025, 31,047 molecular tests<\/strong> were performed and that, so far in 2026, 2,254 new cases<\/strong> have been diagnosed, all currently under treatment.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0This delivery of two new GeneXpert machines represents much more than the addition of technology. It is an investment in lives, because every diagnosis made on time means greater chances of recovery, fewer complications for the patient, and a reduction in the transmission of the disease,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, the Vice Minister of Collective Health, Eladio P\u00e9rez,<\/strong> stated that the expansion of molecular diagnostic coverage constitutes a decisive step toward advancing the national goals for the elimination of tuberculosis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled that, although tuberculosis is a preventable and curable<\/strong> disease, it continues to be one of the main public health challenges worldwide due to, among other factors, the increase in drug-resistant cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the executive director of the National Health Service<\/strong>, Julio C\u00e9sar Landr\u00f3n, formally received the equipment and highlighted that it will strengthen the diagnostic capacity of the Public Network, facilitating faster and more accurate diagnoses<\/strong> that allow for timely treatment initiation and improve care for patients<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
