Cairo.<\/strong> The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) expressed its dissatisfaction this Wednesday with the refereeing and the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during the 2026 World Cup round of 16 match against Argentina, asserting that several decisions directly influenced the development of the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through an official statement, the body chaired by Hany Abo Rida stated that it could not remain silent regarding what it described as an “inappropriate use” of VAR and expressed doubts about the “consistency and impartiality” of the refereeing decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The Federation cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions observed during the match against Argentina, as well as the inappropriate use of VAR. Several key plays raised serious concerns and left deep doubts about the consistency and impartiality of decisions that directly influenced the development of the match,” the EFA stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Protests erupted after Egypt squandered a 2-0 lead and ended up losing 3-2 to the Argentine national team in one of the most dramatic comebacks of the round of 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Egyptian Federation maintains that one of the decisive actions was the annulment, through VAR intervention, of a third goal scored by Mostafa Zico in the 57th minute. Likewise, it indicated that two plays that could have resulted in penalties in favor of the African team were not reviewed by the referees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the EFA, these decisions caused deep frustration among players, coaching staff, and fans, in addition to fueling the debate in Egypt and other Arab countries, where experts and analysts questioned several actions that occurred during the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the criticism, the Federation concluded its statement with a message of support for the national team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “While the result is already part of history, our pride in this team remains intact,” the organization concluded, also thanking the fans for the support provided during Egypt’s participation in the World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The victory allowed Argentina to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Switzerland in search of a spot among the top four in the tournament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Cairo.
