Santo Domingo.\u2013 <\/strong>Businessman and communicator Santiago Mat\u00edas (Alofoke) <\/a>assured that the National Congress will introduce a proposal this Friday to modify 16 articles of the new Penal Code, including several provisions that, as he stated, generated concern due to their impact on freedom of expression and other rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a live broadcast, Mat\u00edas indicated that the changes would be known in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies before the legislation goes into effect next August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The communicator explained that the modifications not only cover the articles related to the so-called “Gag Law,” but also other provisions that, in his view, conflicted with decisions issued by the Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There will be 16 articles that will have changes. It is not only about freedom of expression, there are also other aspects of the Code that will be corrected,” he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mat\u00edas maintained that the modifications are the result of a dialogue process developed over the last three weeks between representatives of alternative media, lawyers, and government officials, following a meeting held at the National Palace with President Luis Abinader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As explained, those meetings were attended by communicators Jos\u00e9 Peguero, Ariel Lara, Ram\u00f3n Tolentino, Ricardo Ripoll, and El Piro, in addition to legal teams that worked on drafting a consensus document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The businessman stated that among the articles to be reviewed are those identified with numbers 192, 308, and 310, pointed out by different sectors as provisions that could affect the exercise of freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he announced that once he receives the document with the agreed-upon modifications, he will make it public so that the citizenry knows the scope of the proposed changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, the authorities have not offered official details regarding the content of the modifications announced by Mat\u00edas, so it is expected that the bill will be formally presented to the National Congress during the course of this Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
