Syria attributed the explosive attacks in the center of Damascus<\/strong> to the terrorist group Islamic State<\/strong> and located a clandestine depot after capturing the cell responsible for the attacks committed during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The explosions occurred on Tuesday, July 7, near the Four Seasons hotel<\/strong>, where Macron stayed overnight, and left one dead and 36 injured<\/strong>, including five hospitalized, as the French president was heading to the presidential palace to meet with Ahmed al-Sharaa<\/strong>. The homemade bombs detonated in a trash container and a vehicle parked meters from the hotel. The blast wave caused material damage to nearby buildings and scattered debris in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attacks occurred shortly after Macron’s departure from the hotel and minutes before his meeting with the Syrian president. Authorities confirmed that the cell had a hidden arsenal and that the material was intended for a series of attacks that sought to destabilize the city at a key moment for Al-Sharaa<\/strong>‘s government, which is attempting to restore security following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Interior Minister Anas Khattab<\/strong> reported that security forces carried out a series of raids in four neighborhoods of Damascus and its outskirts, which allowed for the arrest of the suspects and the discovery of the hideout the cell was using to store explosives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInvestigations are being carried out with the detainees to clarify all the details of the terrorist plot and the cell’s connections, in order to reveal their identities and roles to the public,\u201d he assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ahmad Dalati, the region’s head of internal security, the detainees maintained direct links to the Islamic State<\/strong> and were planning further attacks in the capital. The operation included the arrest of dozens of people, especially in the Ish al-Warwar area, and the seizure of devices ready to be used in future actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These events interrupted the first visit by a European Union head of state to Syria since 2024 and exposed the persistence of active Islamic State<\/strong> cells, despite recent operations and Syria’s alliance with the international coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of the Interior detailed that investigations are ongoing and that, once concluded, they will publicly reveal the identity and connections of the suspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday’s attack followed another incident recorded days earlier at a cafe near the Palace of Justice, where a bomb caused ten deaths and 21 injuries<\/strong>.
