Last March, the island suffered two national blackouts due to a total disconnection of the SEN in less than a week.

In recent weeks, record power outages have been reported, with 70% to 72% of the country being disconnected simultaneously during the peak energy demand periods of the longest blackouts.

On this day, the UNE reported eleven of the country’s sixteen thermoelectric generation units out of operation due to breakdowns or maintenance work.

This situation is explained by the obsolescence of the thermoelectric plants on the island, with decades of operation and without the necessary investments, which causes most of the country’s generation units to suffer breakdowns.

According to various estimates, the Caribbean island requires a little over 100,000 barrels of oil per day to meet its energy needs, of which the island obtains about 40,000 from its national production. The rest should be obtained from abroad.

The energy crisis in Cuba has almost completely paralyzed the state economy, which is estimated to contract by at least 6.5% this year (following a cumulative drop of more than 15% in the previous five years).

Havana.- The process of restoring Cuba’s National Electric Power System (SEN) has begun with the contribution of energy from several generating units, following the new collapse it suffered this Friday, the second this week, as reported by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).
