Cairo. – <\/strong>The former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,<\/a> died this Sunday at the age of 74, as reported in a statement by the Amiri Diwan, the country’s sovereign body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We mourn the passing of the great leader of the nation, His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, may God have mercy on him, who passed away this morning at the age of 74,” the note stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“May God have mercy on the great soul that has departed in this nation and grant him forgiveness (…) May God reward him abundantly for the great and lasting works he performed for his nation and the Arab and Islamic world, and may He grant us all patience and solace,” added the Amiri Diwan without specifying the causes of his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key figure in the country’s development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hamad bin Khalifa was the Emir of Qatar from 1995 and held that position until he voluntarily abdicated in 2013 to make way for his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has held power since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The late emir came to power by overthrowing his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, in a bloodless coup while he was on an official trip to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar for 18 years, was a key figure in the development of the ambitious goals of this small, oil-rich Persian Gulf country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his administration, the country experienced economic, social, and cultural development that strengthened its position in the international community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His son, the Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani<\/a>, continued the legacy of a family that has been in power for more than a century, highlighting a relevant role in Qatar’s regional projection and mediation tasks, in addition to sporting achievements such as the organization of the 2022 World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arab world mourns the death of the former Emir of Qatar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The main leaders and heads of state of the Arab world expressed their condolences and messages of solidarity following the death this Sunday of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, agreeing to highlight his political and diplomatic relevance in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Egypt, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi sent a message of condolences addressed to the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani -son of the deceased-, as well as to the Qatari government and people, wishing for “continued security and stability” to be maintained in the country.

Burial this Sunday in Doha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The former Emir of Qatar will be buried today at the Lusail Cemetery, north of Doha.

The funeral prayer, which will be led by the current Emir, son of the deceased, will be held after the Maghrib prayer at 6:30 p.m. local time (15:30 GMT) at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha, according to a statement from the Emir’s office, which added that after the prayer, his body will be laid to rest in the Lusail cemetery, north of the Qatari capital.
