At least 27 people have died and 73 have been injured, 25 of them seriously, in a fire that broke out shortly before midnight on Sunday at a busy bar in the north of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, according to the latest report released this Monday by the city’s Health Department. Health authorities have announced that 32 people have been discharged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire occurred at Na Lat Phrao Beer Hall, an establishment licensed as a restaurant and live music venue located near the well-known Chatuchak weekend market, one of the city’s most visited spots by foreign tourists. Nearby, there are also several shopping malls, parks, and cinemas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the deceased are 18 women and nine men. Early Monday, the identities of only six of them had been confirmed, according to local authorities. The Efe agency reports that the majority of the injured are Thai, in addition to one person from neighboring Laos and two others whose nationality is still unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of the fire, the venue was housing about 200 people, according to a statement released by the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department, which explains that the fire originated inside the bar, near the stage, \u201cand completely razed it, damaging an estimated area of approximately 164 square meters.\u201d Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control around 12:26 a.m. local time (five hours behind mainland Spain), according to the public television network Thai PBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Metropolitan Administration has avoided establishing the cause of the incident until the expert examination, which began at nine in the morning in Bangkok, is concluded, but as a preliminary hypothesis, they presume it was caused by a short circuit in an air conditioning unit installed on the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police, for their part, have indicated that there could have been irregularities in the emergency exits, an overload of the wiring, and the use of flammable materials in renovation works intended to improve the venue’s acoustics. \u201cWe consider negligence to be the main hypothesis guiding the investigation,\u201d reported the Chief of the National Police, Kittiratt Phanphet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A video posted on social media and verified by the Reuters agency shows thick smoke coming out of the premises and, seconds later, a powerful flare-up bursting through one of the doors, while several people flee amidst screams. According to testimonies gathered by the police, the fire spread at high speed from the front of the establishment, where the stage was located, which pushed numerous customers towards the kitchen and the bathrooms, located at the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial inquiries have revealed that the establishment’s two emergency exits were partially blocked by beer crates, a table, and other objects, which hindered the customers’ escape as the premises filled with smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost of the victims ran to the back of the building, to the restrooms, but the emergency exit was not clearly marked there,\u201d the Thai Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul<\/a>, who traveled to the scene early Monday, explained to the media. Municipal authorities have indicated that the bar had undergone an inspection in April and that, during that review, the emergency exits, evacuation signs, and fire extinguishers were installed correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Charnvirakul’s visit, the teams conducting the investigation explained that a door that had served as an emergency exit in the past was bolted shut because the owner feared that some customers would leave without paying, according to a video released by the prime minister’s office.
