Santo Domingo.\u2013<\/strong> The Dominican Association of Teachers<\/strong> (ADP) stated this Monday that it has not signed any agreement with the Ministry of Education<\/strong> (Minerd) that restricts the right of teachers to hold protests, and assured that it will continue to exercise its power of mobilization whenever it understands that the rights of the teaching profession are being violated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through a statement signed by the president of the National Executive Committee<\/strong> (CEN), Eduardo Hidalgo<\/strong>, the union denied the versions that have circulated in recent days regarding an alleged pact with the Minerd<\/strong> to reduce teaching strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization maintained that it has not signed any protocol, memorandum, or agreement that implies waiving or conditioning the constitutional and union right of teachers to demonstrate in defense of their demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ADP explained that its participation in the so-called Five Pillars Roundtable<\/strong> responds to the interest of contributing to the strengthening of public education through dialogue, without this representing a waiver of the rights acquired by teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported, the Ministry of Education presented a draft memorandum of understanding, which was referred to a commission appointed by the National Executive Committee for its evaluation. That commission held an initial meeting with representatives of the ministry, where it presented observations with the purpose of preventing the document from being interpreted as a limitation on trade union freedom, the autonomy of the union, or the right of teachers to make claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union recalled that the rights to organize, collective bargaining, and protest are protected by the Constitution of the Dominican Republic, national legislation, and Convention 87 of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and therefore considered that no administrative protocol can restrict those guarantees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he reiterated that he will not sign any document containing provisions that could be interpreted as a waiver or conditioning of the rights won by the teaching profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ADP reported that its commission will meet again with representatives of the Minerd this Tuesday, July 14, to continue discussions on the draft memorandum of understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
