Seven hundred points. For many, that figure is the goal. For Joaqu\u00edn L\u00f3pez, it is barely the point where the real question begins.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a moment that Joaqu\u00edn L\u00f3pez describes with some frequency. Someone arrives convinced. They have their report in hand, they open it, they point to the number in the upper corner. Seven hundred, sometimes more. And they expect that to end the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\/She does not close it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What comes after that sentence is usually surprising, because what Joaqu\u00edn L\u00f3pez is trying to explain is not that the number is wrong, but that the number only tells part of the story. And the part it doesn’t tell is, frequently, what determines whether the bank says yes or no. Personal credit in the United States works like an accumulated file: every account that is opened, every payment that is made or missed, every institution one works with, every inquiry that is recorded. A profile can be clean, with no negative items, no past-due debts, and no marks. And yet, it may not be enough. Because what differentiates a clean history from a solid one is the age, the variety of credit types, the utilization ratio that conveys control, and the relationships with institutions that the U.S. financial system recognizes as signs of trust. Without that, the number may be high and the result may still be a rejection. Not because of bad faith from the bank or an error by the applicant, but because the profile does not speak the language the lender needs to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are four steps that Joaqu\u00edn L\u00f3pez identifies as the path to financing: cleaning the report of negative items, strengthening the history so it looks solid, structuring the company correctly, and building strategic banking relationships before needing them. But before any of those steps is something more basic: understanding that the score is not the destination but the starting point of a longer conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to data from the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative published in 2023, Latino businesses are eleven percent more likely than other groups to maintain a healthy business credit score above 680. The number, on average, is not the problem. What remains an obstacle is the gap between having that score and knowing how to use it to access the capital that is needed. That is the distance that Joaqu\u00edn L\u00f3pez has been trying to bridge for years with those who manage their finances without being clear about what the bank is actually looking at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
