The Dominican Republic has the tools to anticipate a possible drought; now the challenge is to articulate the capabilities of the Government, the productive sector, and international cooperation to act in a coordinated manner, because every dollar invested in anticipatory actions can avoid up to seven dollars in losses and response costs,” indicated Castañeda.

As part of the agenda, the director of the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), Gloria Ceballos, presented the climate outlook for the 2026–2027 period, indicating that international analyses forecast the development of conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon during the second half of the year, with a high probability of recording below-normal precipitation and above-average temperatures, factors that would increase the risk of agricultural drought in the country.

Subsequently, the executive president of the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD), Osmar Benítez, presented the vision of the productive sector, while the FAO Agriculture officer, Julián Carrazón, analyzed the potential impacts of a drought scenario on national agricultural production and the need to strengthen preparation and response actions.

During the working session, priority actions were addressed to reduce the effects of a potential drought, including the strengthening of anticipatory actions, planting planning, agricultural credit and insurance mechanisms, early warning systems for fires, the timely dissemination of climate information, and the coordination of social protection programs.

The meeting concluded with the words of the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliviero Espaillat, who highlighted the importance of maintaining permanent coordination between State institutions, international organizations, and producers to protect national agricultural production.

The symposium was attended by the Minister of Public Health, Víctor Atallah; the Minister of Environment, Paíno Henríquez; the Vice Minister of Social Development and Participation of MINPRE, María del Pilar Cañas; the Executive Director of INDRHI, Olmedo Caba; the General Administrator of the Agricultural Bank, Fernando Durán; the Technical Secretary of Setessan, Manuel Robles, among other authorities.

These actions are part of the national strategy to consolidate food security and advance toward the Zero Hunger goal, one of the Government’s main commitments. Thanks to the policies implemented in recent years, the Dominican Republic has recorded sustained progress in reducing undernourishment and food insecurity, which is why strengthening the capacity to anticipate phenomena such as drought is fundamental to preserving those achievements and continuing to bring the country closer to meeting this objective.

The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, led this Monday the High-Level Dialogue “Agricultural Drought Perspectives 2026–2027 and its Implications for National Food Production and Food Security,” an initiative developed by the Ministry of the Presidency together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and representatives of the national agricultural […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-515256","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-uncategorized
https://deultimominuto.com/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/07/WhatsApp-Image-2026-07-13-at-5.57.44-PM-1.jpeg
Martín Adames
https://deultimominuto.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/cropped-WhatsApp-Image-2025-02-11-at-11.04.20-AM-96x96.jpeg
Uncategorized
https://cdn.deultimominuto.com/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/07/WhatsApp-Image-2026-07-13-at-5.57.44-PM-1.jpeg
["GET
