Miami.- <\/strong>NASA stated this Monday that the extreme damage that the recent double earthquake<\/a> in Venezuela left in Caracas and La Guaira was the result of a violent fault rupture that displaced the Earth’s surface by up to 60 centimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US space agency published this Monday a series of data on the seismic event recorded with the NISAR satellite, which was put into orbit a year ago to map the Earth’s surface with millimeter detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to data collected by NASA, the fault that caused the earthquake fractured from the town of Mor\u00f3n, advanced through the sea, and returned to land near the Caracas international airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This fault is part of a network of fractures located along the boundary between the Caribbean plate, to the north, and the South American plate, to the south,” he explained in a statement, noting that the faults accumulated tension “for a long time” before fracturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South of the Caracas airport, one of the largest land displacements was recorded, reaching up to 60 centimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The severity of earthquakes in Venezuela<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The severity of the double earthquake of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, which struck the country on June 24th and has already claimed 4,561 lives, led to the first-ever activation of the NISAR urgent response system to map the damage from a major earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This rapid processing allows for data to be supplied within a 12 to 24-hour timeframe to support disaster response efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of injured and homeless people due to the earthquakes remains at 16,740 and 17,907, respectively, according to the latest report released on social media by Jorge Rodr\u00edguez, president of the Venezuelan Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
