Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>.- The president-elect of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, assured this Monday that he will take office on August 7th at a military garrison in the south of the country, despite the fact that the outgoing president, Gustavo Petro, said that he does not authorize the inauguration to take place in a battalion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Colombians can be sure that I will keep my promise. I am going to be sworn in in the south of the country at a military garrison to pay a solemn tribute to the heroes of the nation and to the uniformed personnel who protect democracy, freedom, and institutional order<\/strong>,” said De la Espriella tonight in a message to the country through his social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president-elect, who during the electoral campaign showed his closeness to the military establishment, even with the military salute and the slogan “Firm for the fatherland!”, wants to make clear from the beginning the weight that the Military Forces will have in his Government and that is why his insistence that the inauguration be held in a military unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Petro said last night on his X account that he is the “supreme commander of the military forces<\/strong>” until August 7 and as such he ordered “that no military establishment be used for the inauguration of a president of the Republic of Colombia<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with what appears to be a dead end, De la Espriella made a “direct and patriotic appeal today to the new Congress of the Republic<\/strong>,” which will be installed on July 20th, and in which he does not have a majority, to make “the right decision to comply with that mandate from the people<\/strong>” and allow his inauguration at a military garrison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You have, congressmen, the opportunity to show the country that you are willing to work in harmony, always facing the people, with open cards, without backroom deals, and faithfully interpreting those who voted for a ‘miracle homeland,’ built by everyone, but without politicking or corruption,” he stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Colombian Constitution establishes that the presidential inauguration must take place before Congress and has traditionally been held in the Elliptical Hall of the Capitol, although the last inaugurations have taken place in the Plaza de Bol\u00edvar, in the center of Bogot\u00e1, and there is no precedent for a different venue, such as the one De la Espriella wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with criticism from those who consider that moving the presidential inauguration to a military garrison in the south poses an enormous logistical and security challenge due to the presence of heads of state or government and representatives of international organizations among the guests, De la Espriella said that one of the symbols of his government will be austerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want an austere inauguration, without waste. I am not going to legalize the squandering to which the corrupt politicking of the outgoing government is accustomed.
