SANTO DOMINGO.<\/strong> The Ministry of Education (MINERD) and the National Institute of Physical Education (INEFI) received this Tuesday the torch for the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026<\/strong>, in a ceremony filled with enthusiasm and symbolism ahead of the start of the regional event, which will be held from July 24 to August 8 at various venues in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps<\/strong>, and the executive director of INEFI, Alberto Rodr\u00edguez Mella<\/strong>, led the flame reception ceremony, which was delivered by athletes and physical education teachers on the esplanade of MINERD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, Rodr\u00edguez Mella highlighted that the celebration of the Games represents a source of pride for the country and emphasized the impact of school sports on the development of athletes who are now part of the national pre-selections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official reported that more than 40 athletes pre-selected<\/strong> to represent the Dominican Republic in the Games emerged from the 2023 Barahona and 2025 San Francisco de Macor\u00eds National School Sports Games<\/strong>, as well as other tournaments organized by INEFI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is a great achievement that school-age students have reached this competitive level. Some will join the final selection and others will not, but having been shortlisted already represents a huge success for school sports,” expressed Rodr\u00edguez Mella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He indicated that these young people will compete in disciplines such as athletics, basketball, softball, judo, and table tennis, among others, reflecting the growth of the sports program promoted by INEFI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The executive director also announced that the “Battle of the Graduating Classes”<\/strong> basketball tournament, recently held in Regional 10 of Santo Domingo East, will be extended to other regions of the country, including Santiago, and announced that a women’s volleyball version will be organized for high school seniors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding education, Rodr\u00edguez Mella highlighted the progress in the implementation of initial psychomotricity rooms<\/strong>, installed so far in 13 educational centers, with the goal of expanding this program to the entire public education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he reported that INEFI will develop virtual training aimed at 1,300 physical education teachers<\/strong> on the use of these specialized classrooms, emphasizing that teacher training is key to the success of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, he valued the agreements signed between INEFI and various sports federations, which have allowed for the strengthening of technical and refereeing training for teachers and coaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Before high performance comes school sports, and that is why we work hand in hand with the federations to continue training athletes from the classrooms,” he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
