Cleveland. \u2013<\/strong> Surgeons at Cleveland Clinic<\/strong> successfully performed the health system’s first robotic lung transplant in the United States, marking an advancement in organ transplantation using minimally invasive techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institution reported that it is one of the few centers in the world capable of carrying out this type of procedure, because it requires advanced robotic capabilities and a highly specialized surgical team. In addition, Cleveland Clinic indicated that it was the first center in Ohio to perform this intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The procedure was led by Dr. Gregory Jones<\/strong>, a thoracic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. The surgical team also included Dr. Kenneth McCurry<\/strong>, a cardiothoracic surgeon, surgical director of lung transplants, and general director of transplants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a traditional lung transplant, surgeons typically access the chest by dividing the sternum or making a large incision between the ribs to reach the lungs. This approach can be associated with considerable pain and a longer recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, a robotic lung transplant uses small incisions, robotic instruments, and 3D visualization to perform the procedure using a less invasive method. According to Cleveland Clinic, this approach is designed to help reduce postoperative pain, shorten hospital stays, and accelerate rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis milestone represents a significant step forward in our approach to lung transplantation,\u201d said Dr. Jones. \u201cIt builds on our expertise in both robotic surgery and the care of transplant patients, and offers one more option to those who may benefit from a minimally invasive procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intervention was performed on a man approximately 70 years old who suffered from pulmonary fibrosis<\/strong>, a progressive disease that causes scarring in the lungs and can make breathing increasingly difficult. Following the transplant, the patient was discharged from the hospital and is recovering satisfactorily, according to the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleveland Clinic highlighted that robotic surgery has transformed multiple cardiothoracic interventions over the last decade and that its application to lung transplantation expands the possibilities for advanced and minimally invasive care in the field of transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cleveland Clinic Lung Transplant Program has performed more than 2,500 transplants since 1990<\/strong>. In 2025 alone, the institution performed 146 lung transplants<\/strong> in the United States, including complex cases of patients who, according to the institution, had been rejected at other centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Cleveland Clinic highlighted its international experience in this field. Last year, a team at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performed the institution’s first robotic lung transplant, a procedure that was also the first of its kind performed in the Gulf region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
