Buenos Aires .- <\/strong>Argentina has filed a formal protest with the United Kingdom over the presence of a British Navy vessel in South Atlantic waters under the jurisdiction of the South American country, reported<\/a> official sources this Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Argentine Foreign Ministry reported in a statement that last Monday it presented a formal note of protest to the United Kingdom embassy in Buenos Aires to express its “most energetic rejection of the movements of the vessel HMS Medway, illegally deployed in the Malvinas Islands,” an archipelago under British rule and whose sovereignty is claimed by the South American country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


According to the statement, the movements of the HMS Medway, a British Navy patrol vessel, “were not duly notified in accordance with the existing bilateral agreements and declarations, and involved transit through Argentine territorial waters.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tension between Argentina and the United Kingdom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“The Argentine Government firmly rejects this British military incursion into areas under Argentine jurisdiction, which adds to a sustained policy of unilateral acts incompatible with United Nations resolutions and the duty of both parties to refrain from altering the situation while the sovereignty dispute remains pending a solution,” the statement notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argentina asserted that the “unilateral and illegal movements” of the vessel “contravene the bilateral commitments on confidence-building measures in the military sphere in force between the two countries.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Argentine government also maintained that the movements of the HMS Medway “add to the long series of unilateral actions” that the United Kingdom carries out in contravention of United Nations General Assembly resolution 31\/49, which urges both parties to refrain from unilateral actions regarding the Malvinas while the sovereignty dispute remains pending resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Falklands War<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Far from generating the conditions of trust and understanding that a mature bilateral relationship requires, these actions deepen tensions in the South Atlantic, disregard the repeated mandate of the international community, and hinder Argentine efforts to advance toward a peaceful and negotiated solution to the controversy,” Argentina stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South American country, which in 1982 fought a war with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, reaffirmed “its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereign rights” over the islands and the surrounding maritime spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“By history, by right, and by conviction, the Malvinas are Argentine,” the statement concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the protest note was submitted last Monday, the diplomatic claim only became known this Wednesday, shortly after the Argentina national football team defeated England in the 2026 World Cup semifinals, a match in which the Falklands issue loomed over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Argentine players themselves unfurled, after the victory against England, a flag<\/a> with the slogan “the Malvinas are Argentine”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
