Santo Domingo<\/strong>.\u2013 With the purpose of decentralizing the Dominican film industry and positioning the southern region as a new cultural and audiovisual benchmark, the first edition of the Maguana Film Festival, the first film festival in San Juan de la Maguana and the entire southern region of the Dominican Republic, will be held from November 8 to 14, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the slogan “Here the next stories begin<\/strong>“, the event seeks to open new opportunities for emerging talent, strengthen the development of the national audiovisual industry, and turn San Juan into a permanent stage for film exhibition, training, and creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is led by Fidia Peralta and has the institutional support of the General Directorate of Cinema (DGCINE), Caribbean Cinemas, and PRODU. For seven days, Caribbean Cinemas San Juan will be the official venue for the festival, with a program that will include national and international competitions, film premieres, specialized workshops, panel discussions, educational activities, and networking spaces for students, filmmakers, producers, and industry professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peralta explained that the festival will also have an important social component, with initiatives aimed at women in vulnerable conditions and victims of violence. As part of the programming, the international talk “How my first business started” will be held, in which two international actresses will participate to share their entrepreneurial experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The women who participate will not only hear those stories, but will also receive training and seed capital in cash to start their own businesses<\/strong>,” expressed the festival director. Likewise, she announced that during the event, a fully equipped business will be raffled off as part of the initiative’s social impact actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organizer highlighted that the festival’s goal transcends the cinematic realm. “It is not only going to be glamour, but we are going to leave things behind, not only in San Juan de la Maguana, but also in foundations, so that everyone can take advantage of this festival<\/strong>,” she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the choice of San Juan as the venue, Peralta explained that it responds to his desire to promote the cultural development of his home province. “I have always had that concern about what I am going to bring to my people, so that it can be seen. San Juan is a beautiful land, with its people, its gastronomy, and its culture, and it deserves to be recognized<\/strong>,” he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competencies to boost new talent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Maguana Film Festival will feature three competitive categories. Semillas del Granero (Seeds of the Granary) will be aimed at fifth and sixth-year high school students, with a prize of RD$60,000 for the winning class. This category will be coordinated by actress, director, and screenwriter Shanel Valois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its part, Nuevas Cosechas will bring together short films made by university students and emerging filmmakers from across the country, under the coordination of actress and producer Isabel Aquino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Gran Cosecha will be the festival’s main competition, consisting of national, international, and commercial film productions. This category will include the Official First Feature Competition, in its national and international modalities, with the purpose of recognizing the first films of directors starting their careers and promoting exchange between Dominican cinema and international cinematography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry training and development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the competitions, the festival will offer film workshops taught by renowned professionals in the sector, as well as free social workshops aimed at the community, reaffirming its commitment to education, inclusion, and access to culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agenda also includes professional meetings and networking spaces to facilitate alliances and future co-productions between students, filmmakers, producers, and national and international guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The general logistics of the festival will be coordinated by cultural manager Natacha Hablitscheck, while the marketing strategy will be led by Kiverly Herrera, with the goal of strengthening the national and international projection of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the conclusion of the presentation, Fidia Peralta invited the public to follow the festival’s news through its social media channels and to be part of the Maguana Film Festival experience, which will be held from November 8 to 14 in San Juan de la Maguana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
