The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 5,208, according to an official update released Sunday by National Assembly President Jorge Rodr\u00edguez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities reported that 16,740 people have been injured, while 17,907 residents remain without homes. The government also said 23,820 people are currently staying in 107 temporary shelters, and more than 128,000 families have received assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes, officials have recorded 1,388 aftershocks. The latest, a magnitude 3 tremor, occurred early Sunday off the coast of La Guaira, according to the Venezuelan Seismological Research Foundation (Funvisis). No damage was reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The official assessment indicates that 856 buildings have been damaged, including 190 that collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Ministry of Ecosocialism announced progress on an environmental recovery plan for La Guaira, the state hardest hit by the earthquakes. The initiative includes phytoremediation, a technique that uses vegetation to help restore coastal ecosystems, as well as territorial planning aimed at rebuilding affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
