Istanbul.- <\/em><\/strong>Turkish authorities are investigating the death of an Indonesian sailor in a drone attack on a vessel in the Black Sea, while it was sailing near the coast of Russia, the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office reported this Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack took place last Thursday night, when the Panama-flagged freighter Asomatos was sailing in Russian territorial waters off the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea, waiting to receive cargo, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office, cited by the Turkish agency Anadolu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three drones struck the vessel, damaging the deck, the funnel, and one of the cranes, at a time when there were three Greek citizens, three Egyptians, and 14 Indonesians on board, as well as three Russian port agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Indonesian crew member died as a result of the attack and the vessel was ordered to sail south, entering Turkish waters the following day, Friday, and finally anchoring on Saturday off the coast of Istanbul, in the roadstead at the northern mouth of the Bosphorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Turkish authorities boarded the cargo ship to collect evidence of what happened, bring the sailor’s body ashore, and perform an autopsy, the Prosecutor’s Office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Asomatos, a 170-meter-long freighter with a deadweight of 28,000 tons, which frequently travels the route between the Russian port of Novorossiysk and the Egyptian port of Alexandria, was carrying a cargo of 4,751 tons of wheat, according to the Turkish Prosecutor’s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last May, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, complained that the Asomatos had unloaded in Alexandria wheat shipped from Russia, but which in his view originated from Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
