United States<\/strong>.- U.S. President Donald Trump announced today an additional 50% tariff on Canadian products to, as he alleged, counteract trade disadvantages present in the relationship with his northern neighbor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed three proclamations to impose additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products<\/strong> in response to Canada’s discriminatory treatment of U.S. products,” reads a fact sheet<\/a> published on the official White House website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Washington’s point of view, this measure “offsets the burden and disadvantage to U.S. commerce caused by Canada’s discriminatory treatment and levels the playing field for crucial U.S. exports: automobiles, alcohol, and dairy products<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document specifies that “tariffs will not apply to energy<\/a>, potash”<\/strong> or goods already subject to tariffs, in a list that includes steel, aluminum, copper,<\/strong> trucks and automobiles, lumber, pharmaceuticals, fish, and critical minerals<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the basis for the decision, it is indicated that “between April 2025 and March 2026, Canadian imports of U.S. vehicles decreased by approximately 22%, or $5.6 billion, compared to the same period in 2024-2025,” while in the case of imports of U.S. alcoholic beverages, a decrease of 81% is noted in the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“President Trump’s tariffs<\/a> have fostered 18 agreements that open new markets for U.S. exports and restore reciprocity in U.S. trade relations. However, Canada has chosen to discriminate against the U.S.<\/strong>, rather than address Canadian trade barriers,” the text concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
