Santo Domingo.-<\/strong> The president of the Permanent Commission on Interior and Police of the Chamber of Deputies<\/a>, Carlos S\u00e1nchez, reported that he will request an extension of the deadline to continue the study of the bill that modifies the Organic Law of the National Police (Law 590-16), considering that the initiative requires a deeper analysis before submitting a report to the plenary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e1nchez explained that the commission has held four meetings since it received the legislative piece, submitted by the Senate last July 13, following its approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are working at full capacity to see if we can submit a report before the legislative session ends, but the bill has 516 pages and 342 articles. It is a project of great magnitude that deserves to be studied carefully,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislator indicated that, although a fixed deadline was initially set to submit the report this Tuesday, the commission understands that it is necessary to have more time to review the content of the proposal and evaluate the observations that may be presented by both the members of the commission and any interested deputy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have the authority to request an extension of the deadline and that is what we are going to ask for. It is impossible to conclude a responsible study in the time we had established,” he maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e1nchez explained that so far the commission has identified around eight observations to the project, although he warned that new ones could arise as the article-by-article review progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If we had wanted to approve the project as it arrived from the Senate, we would have already done so. We are precisely studying it to identify the points that generate differences and build a consensus-based reform,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about the criticisms made by the former director of the National Police, Rafael Guillermo Guzm\u00e1n Ferm\u00edn, who claimed that the reform violates the acquired rights of officers and creates the position of a civilian deputy director, S\u00e1nchez responded that all those observations will be evaluated by the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Those and any other proposals will be analyzed. Any deputy, regardless of the bench they belong to, can present observations because this is the house of democracy,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president of the commission pointed out that, if the Chamber of Deputies introduces modifications to the bill, it must return to the Senate to review the changes, which could prevent its approval before the end of the current legislative session, scheduled for July 26.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
