Vatican City.- <\/em><\/strong>Pope Leo XIV appointed a new bishop in China, Giuseppe Chang Yanfeng, titular of the diocese of Chifeng, the result of the agreement signed during the pontificate of Francis with the Beijing authorities and which, with some difficulties, was renewed until 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican reported that the episcopal ordination of Chang Yanfeng took place this Wednesday, whom the Pope had appointed bishop on June 15, 2026, “after having approved his candidacy within the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American pope had previously appointed two other Chinese bishops, thus continuing the implementation of the agreement, approved in 2018 and already renewed twice, which allows for the consensual election of bishops, a prerogative of the pope that Beijing viewed as interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both States have not maintained diplomatic relations since 1951, following the rise of the communist Mao Zedong, and since then, Catholics in that country have been divided between the patriotic Church, controlled by Beijing, and the underground one, loyal to Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, with ups and downs in the implementation of the agreement, a dozen episcopal ordinations have taken place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the points of the pact are unknown, on one occasion Francis had explained that the choice was made in agreement with the country’s authorities, but that he had the final say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Donald Trump’s first presidency in the United States, the country where Leo XIV is originally from, there were some tensions with the Vatican regarding the decision to move forward with the agreement with China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, stated in the past that the Holy See continues to consider the agreement positive “as it has allowed the Holy See and China to reach a basic consensus on the fundamental issue of the appointment of bishops.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
