New Delhi.-<\/em><\/strong> India asked China on Wednesday to address market access, the trade imbalance, and the predictability of supply chains as part of the normalization of relations between the two Asian powers, which are still marked by the border crisis that erupted in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised these concerns during a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Manila, according to a statement released by New Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“However, there are also important aspects of our relations that need to be addressed. Equitable market access and the trade balance occupy a prominent place in this regard. There are also concerns about the predictability of supply chains,”<\/em><\/strong> stated the Indian Foreign Minister in a statement, following the bilateral meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Delhi and Beijing have gradually resumed contacts since 2024, with progress such as the resumption of mutual visa issuance, the reopening of border trade, and the recovery of direct flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the trade deficit with China was more than 99 billion dollars in the 2024-25 fiscal year, more than with any other country. This trade gap has been growing in recent years, to the concern of New Delhi, according to a report by the Indian Embassy in Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trade dispute has reached the World Trade Organization (WTO) in recent months, where Beijing has pushed for the creation of two panels to discuss the imposition of Indian tariffs against China in the areas of high technology, energy, and automotive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is natural that, as two large and important nations, and also such close neighbors, India and China have their own particular interests. That is why our leaders agreed that differences should not become conflicts. It is the responsibility of diplomacy to manage them appropriately,” added Jaishankar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two most populous nations in the world have intensified diplomatic and security contacts in recent months to stabilize a relationship still conditioned by the border dispute in the Himalayas, the origin of the worst bilateral crisis in decades following the military clash of June 2020 in the Galwan Valley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
