HOUSTON.<\/strong> The Miami Marlins<\/strong> pulled off one of the most spectacular defensive plays of the season by completing the first triple play in Major League Baseball in 2026<\/strong>, an action that unfolded in just five seconds during Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros<\/strong> at Daikin Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic play occurred in the eighth inning, after Dominican Yordan \u00c1lvarez<\/strong> and Mexican Isaac Paredes<\/strong> hit consecutive singles. With runners on first and second, Venezuelan Jos\u00e9 Altuve<\/strong> hit a ground ball to Panamanian third baseman Leo Jim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, who stepped on third base for the first out, threw to Xavier Edwards<\/strong> to retire the runner at second, and he completed the sequence with a throw to Kyle Stowers<\/strong> at first base to seal the triple play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to be part of something like this. Those are plays you don\u2019t see very often on a baseball field,\u201d said Stowers, who admitted that at first he thought the play would end in a double play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miami manager Clayton McCullough<\/strong> also highlighted the defensive execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The triple play was the first recorded in Major League Baseball during the 2026 season<\/strong> and only the second in Marlins history<\/strong>.
