{"id":516939,"date":"2026-07-22T17:56:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T21:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/?p=516939"},"modified":"2026-07-22T17:56:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T21:56:39","slug":"trump-administration-asks-u-s-court-to-recognize-delcy-rodriguezs-immunity-in-florida-civil-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/international\/trump-administration-asks-u-s-court-to-recognize-delcy-rodriguezs-immunity-in-florida-civil-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration asks U.S. court to recognize Delcy Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s immunity in Florida civil case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to support judicial immunity for Venezuela\u2019s interim president, <strong>Delcy Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, in a civil lawsuit pending in federal court in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The request was made in a July 11 letter from State Department Legal Adviser <strong>Reed Rubinstein<\/strong> to Assistant Attorney General <strong>Brett Shumate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the letter, the State Department has officially recognized Rodr\u00edguez as Venezuela\u2019s head of state since March 5, following her assumption of the presidency on an interim basis after the capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro by U.S. forces on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a result, the Department of State requests that the Department of Justice promptly file a suggestion of immunity with the district court,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rodr\u00edguez is named in a civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida alleging kidnappings, torture, and acts of terrorism linked to Venezuela\u2019s ruling establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 15, the court ordered $314 million in damages in the case.
