International Desk.-<\/strong> The Houthis <\/a>claimed early this Thursday to have attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea which, according to the Yemeni rebels, did not comply with the blockade they are carrying out in this region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the Yemeni group, an ally of Iran, reported that it carried out a “qualitative military operation” with drones and missiles that struck the two vessels, named “Encelia” and “Layla,” and caused fires on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first military action undertaken by the Houthis since Monday, when they announced a maritime blockade of Saudi-linked vessels in the Red Sea, a relevant global oil trade route, especially since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by the Iranians in retaliation for United States attacks against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump warned last Tuesday that he would take action if the Houthis carried out their blockade threats, just like Saudi Arabia, which promised to protect its vessels with “all necessary measures.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This escalation represents the most serious direct confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since both sides began a UN-backed rapprochement process in 2022, which drastically reduced cross-border attacks, although a comprehensive peace agreement has never been reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
