Santiago<\/strong>.- A young Haitian national identified as Roldan Jean Louis, 25 years old, went missing this Wednesday afternoon after jumping into the Ulises Francisco Espaillat (UFE) irrigation canal in the Santiago Oeste municipal district, where he was swept away by the current despite desperate attempts by several people to save his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Fabio Pe\u00f1a Ventura, a witness, the incident occurred while Jean Louis was washing clothes on the bank of the canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, he claimed he knew how to swim and asked to be recorded with a cell phone before jumping into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Witnesses narrated that, after submerging, the young man was unable to return to the surface. Several people who were bathing upstream ran to assist him and managed to grab him by the head, but the force of the current overcame their efforts and dragged him away again until he disappeared under the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the incident, units from emergency response agencies and authorities launched an extensive search operation along the canal to try to locate the young man, whose whereabouts remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roldan Jean Louis worked at a local cabinetmaking shop and resided in the Zona Sur sector of West Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has once again brought to the table the risks posed by the UFE<\/a> channel. Community members reported that part of the perimeter fence remains open and is used to extract water, a situation that, they claim, facilitates access to the tributary and exposes children, youth, and adults to tragedies like this one.
