Cleveland<\/em>.- <\/strong>A new report published in The Lancet Haematology, led by Bethany Samuelson Bannow, M.D., a hematologist at Cleveland Clinic, presents practical strategies to improve<\/a> diagnosis, care, and outcomes worldwide for women and girls with hematological conditions, such as bleeding disorders, heavy menstrual bleeding, postpartum hemorrhage, thrombosis, and maternal hematological complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lancet Haematology Commission highlights the need for earlier diagnosis, more consistent treatment, and greater investment in research and education regarding haematological conditions. Based on evidence from clinical care, research, public health, and policy, the findings of the Lancet Haematology Commission were presented during the 2026 Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in Paris, France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cImproving hematologic care for women of all ages represents one of the clearest opportunities to strengthen health outcomes globally,\u201d said lead author Samuelson Bannow, M.D., director of classical hematology at Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur findings underscore an important, yet addressable, gap in women’s health worldwide. The tools already exist, and this article offers a forward-looking roadmap to apply them more consistently and equitably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission determined that women and girls face inequalities in blood-related health, including higher rates of anemia, delays in diagnosis, insufficient treatment, and complications arising from bleeding and clotting disorders, particularly in relation to menstruation, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. The report also notes that women continue to be underrepresented in clinical trials, while their specific health issues are often ignored in research, public policy, and medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important recommendations of the report is to reduce the significant delay in the diagnosis of bleeding disorders: women wait an average of between 14 and 16 years to receive a diagnosis, compared to the approximately two years that men wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the central themes of the report is heavy menstrual bleeding, which affects up to one in three women and is often the first sign of an inherited bleeding disorder. However, this issue is frequently downplayed or inadequately treated. The study authors advocate for routine menstrual health assessment, wider use of bleeding assessment tools, and more robust referral pathways to facilitate early recognition and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission set a key goal to reduce the average time from symptom onset to diagnosis in women and girls with bleeding disorders to less than 24 months by 2035. The authors acknowledge that this goal is ambitious, but assert that it is achievable if screening recommendations are incorporated into major clinical guidelines and supported by training for healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe publication of this report represents an important milestone for women’s health and hematology,\u201d said Dr. Pantep Angchaisuksiri, president of the ISTH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWomen face unique challenges related to bleeding and clotting disorders throughout their lives; however, many aspects of their care remain unrecognized or understudied. This report provides an important resource for clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and advocates to improve outcomes globally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report urges immediate action to close gender gaps in hematological health and ensure equitable, evidence-based care worldwide. Key recommendations include faster diagnosis of bleeding disorders; universal screening for heavy menstrual bleeding and iron deficiency; standardized protocols for postpartum hemorrhage; and more personalized care for thrombosis during pregnancy and the postpartum period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors also advocate for the updating of clinical guidelines, greater inclusion of women in research, specific education and prevention programs, and increased investment in women’s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe evidence is clear: it is possible to achieve significant progress,\u201d stated Dr. Samuelson Bannow. \u201cWith coordinated action between clinical care, research, and education, we can provide more timely, effective, and equitable hematological care to women and girls around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
