SANTO DOMINGO.<\/strong> The Colombia<\/strong> national team secured its spot in the final of the men’s water polo tournament at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026<\/strong>, after defeating Mexico<\/strong> 16-11<\/strong> in the semifinal held at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center aquatic park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coffee-growing team, which arrived undefeated as the leader of Group A<\/strong> with a 3-0 record and had previously eliminated Guatemala<\/strong> in the quarterfinals, confirmed its status as the favorite and will compete for the gold medal against the winner of the duel between Puerto Rico<\/strong> and Cuba<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico, second in Group B<\/strong> with a 2-1 record and winner over Costa Rica<\/strong> in the quarterfinals, offered resistance for much of the match, but never managed to reduce the deficit to less than two goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombia dominated the first half 7-5<\/strong>, after prevailing 5-4<\/strong> in the first period and 2-1<\/strong> in the second. Although the Mexicans closed the gap to 10-8<\/strong> in the third quarter, the South Americans responded with an offensive that allowed them to close that stretch with a 12-8<\/strong> lead. In the final quarter, they maintained control of the game until sealing the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Colombian attack was led by Alejandro Saldarriaga<\/strong>, who scored five goals<\/strong>, while Juan Vallejo<\/strong> contributed four. Juan Zuluaga<\/strong> and Santiago Cuervo<\/strong> also scored with two goals each, in addition to Carlos S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, Sebasti\u00e1n Rend\u00f3n<\/strong>, and Jean L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, with one goal apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mexico, Rafael Mart\u00ednez<\/strong> was the top scorer with three goals. Diego Lucero<\/strong>, Diego Mercado<\/strong>, and Pablo Coraza<\/strong> added two goals each, while Iann Garc\u00eda<\/strong> and Matthew Mor\u00e1n<\/strong> completed the offense with one goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The medal round for men’s water polo will take place this Saturday, July 25<\/strong>. The matches for the fifth to eighth place classification will begin at 2:00 PM<\/strong>, while the bronze medal<\/strong> match and subsequently the grand final for the gold<\/strong> will start from 5:00 PM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
