Bogot\u00e1, Colombia.<\/strong> Within the framework of the fourteenth edition of the Gabo Festival 2026, one of the most important gatherings in Ibero-America dedicated to journalism, literature, and culture, innovation and artificial intelligence specialist Ana Paula Valacco stated that the true value of artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> for journalism does not lie in the technology itself, but in the ability of journalists to ask the right questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the conference \u201cHow to make AI valuable for your journalism?\u201d, held under the festival’s theme \u201cHere we are. Here we tell\u201d, Valacco maintained that the difference between organizations that successfully incorporate artificial intelligence and those that do not lies in the identification of the problems they seek to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe key question will always be: what is the real problem we want to solve?\u201d, the specialist stated, explaining that before implementing any technological tool, it is necessary to define the organization’s needs and the hypotheses that one wishes to test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expert pointed out that, since the emergence of ChatGPT in 2022, access to artificial intelligence is no longer exclusive to specialists, so the true differentiator is no longer the technology, but strategic thinking and the power to formulate good questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valacco compared artificial intelligence to a hammer to warn about the risks of turning it into the answer for everything. \u201cIf we believe the only tool is a hammer, every problem will end up looking like a nail,\u201d he explained, insisting that the problem must be understood first and then the appropriate technology chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his speech, he highlighted that AI can become an ally of journalism in multiple areas, from searching for information in large databases and producing content in different formats to translation, accessibility through audio, audience analysis, content segmentation, distribution strategies, marketing, subscriber and donor management, as well as measuring editorial impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he stressed that one of the great challenges for the media is to anticipate the questions, concerns, and information needs of audiences, generating content that answers those doubts before they turn into misinformation. In that sense, he stated that credibility will continue to be journalism’s main asset and that the media must consolidate themselves as benchmarks for reliable information. He added that artificial intelligence can play an important role in that goal, provided it is used to strengthen journalistic processes and rely on official and verified sources, without replacing the editorial judgment of journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he warned that its implementation also involves significant challenges, including biases present in the models, performance differences between languages, adoption costs, and the growing dependence on technology platforms whose policies and conditions may change over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a practical guide, he proposed thinking about artificial intelligence from three approaches: augmenting, by enhancing human capabilities; automating, by delegating repetitive and mechanical tasks; and transforming, by completely rethinking work processes to develop new ways of doing journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The specialist explained that journalists must identify which tasks consume time without providing strategic value, which processes create bottlenecks, and where AI can expand human capabilities, especially in the analysis of large volumes of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valacco also shared the results of an international media support program developed since 2019, in which organizations from the Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, and the United States participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As stated, after nine months of work, 96% of the organizations managed to develop a prototype based on artificial intelligence, 70% improved their workflows and strengthened their teams’ skills, while nearly 40% managed to reach new audiences through innovative formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an example, he presented the case of The European Correspondent, a newsroom distributed across different European countries that developed an artificial intelligence assistant to support content editing. The tool offers suggestions for style and clarity, but editorial decisions remain in the hands of the journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also highlighted the experience of another organization that used AI to detect biases, identify context gaps, and review the quality of its content, thereby strengthening critical thinking within the newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the final part of his lecture, Valacco invited the attendees to reflect on the stories that they cannot tell today due to a lack of time or workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat stories are we failing to tell because we don’t have the time?\u201d, he asked the journalists, noting that artificial intelligence should serve to free up time, automate repetitive processes, and allow professionals to focus on investigating, interviewing, and delving into the topics that truly impact society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The specialist concluded that artificial intelligence should not be understood as a substitute for journalism, but rather as a tool to strengthen rigor, expand the capabilities of newsrooms, and help fulfill the essential mission of the media: to tell better stories and serve their audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gabo Festival 2026, held from July 24 to 26 in Bogot\u00e1, brings together journalists, writers, artists, and opinion leaders from Latin America and the world to debate democracy, freedom of expression, disinformation, artificial intelligence, and new ways of narrating reality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
