Caracas.- <\/strong>More than 8,000 structures have been inspected in Caracas by the College of Engineers<\/a> of Venezuela (CIV) following the earthquakes on June 24, with the aim of determining their habitability, identifying critical failures, and providing recommendations to communities and local authorities to mitigate vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was reported by the CIV in a press release, where it detailed that more than 70% of the inspected buildings were classified as habitable and around 25% as “habitable with caution” or “not habitable”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have had the presence of some 6,000 colleagues in the affected areas, providing a voluntary and completely free service to give peace of mind to the population,” assured Rafael Argotti, member of the National Board of Directors of the CIV, cited in the note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argotti stressed that the inspections will continue in the “areas that present the highest population density and older structures within the capital.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“An estimated 12,000 global inspections are expected through the joint effort between the CIV, mayors’ offices, universities, the Fire Department, and Civil Protection,” the press release adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Friday marked one month since the devastating double earthquake that mainly affected the northern area of Venezuela and has left at least 5,546 dead, 16,740 injured, and 17,907 people homeless, according to the Government. In addition, this disaster left some 856 buildings affected and 190 collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Bank estimated on Thursday the direct physical damage caused by the earthquakes that shook Venezuela at 19.6 billion dollars and warned that a slow reconstruction could hinder the country’s economic recovery over the next decade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
