Mexico City .- <\/strong>The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum,<\/a> rejected this Monday the accusations made by the Argentine president, Javier Milei, who claimed that the Mexican government participated in an alleged social media campaign against Argentina during the 2026 World Cup, and reiterated that her administration maintains a policy of respect for the self-determination of peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her morning press conference, the president described Milei’s claims as false and asserted that the Mexican government does not intervene in the internal affairs of other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is false. There is no campaign against any country in the world, nor against any government in the world,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campaign “against” the Mexican government<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The president maintained that, on the contrary, her administration has been the target of attacks from different fronts, although she insisted that Mexico does not respond in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is indeed an orchestrated campaign from many places against our Government, but we are not in the habit of meddling with other countries,” he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexican foreign policy continues to be guided by the constitutional principle of non-intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Again. Self-determination of peoples and we ask for the same. Respect,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milei points to Mexico and Brazil<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The president’s statements are in response to the accusations made by Milei during an interview with Radio Mitre, in which he claimed that the Brazilian government financed a campaign against Argentina during the World Cup. Furthermore, he asserted that this strategy had the backing of Mexico and the United States Democratic Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Do you know who put the most money into this anti-Argentina campaign? The Brazilian government; 25% of the resources came from there,” stated the Argentine president, who linked that alleged offensive to criticisms spread on social media regarding the performance of the Argentine national team during the tournament and other accusations related to the South American country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milei asserted that Argentina has become “an emblem of freedom” and attributed the criticism to the fact that his Government represents, as he stated, “a beacon of the West” that challenges those who “hide behind the present State.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diplomatic tension between Argentina and Brazil<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The accusations came amid a new episode of diplomatic tension between Argentina and Brazil, after the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled its ambassador in Buenos Aires for consultations following the insults uttered by Milei against President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a Liberal Party (PL) convention in Brazil, the Argentine president called Lula a “thief” and accused him of promoting socialism in Latin America. He also criticized magistrate Alexandre de Moraes, who led the judicial process that resulted in the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro for coup-mongering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico and Argentina have maintained political differences since Milei came to power in December 2023.
