Washington.-<\/strong> U.S. attacks on 67 boats allegedly loaded with drugs as part<\/a> of an anti-drug trafficking campaign in the Caribbean and the Pacific, in which more than 200 people have died, have not slowed the flow of cocaine into the country, according to official data published this Monday by The Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Post cites an assessment by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), not yet published, which warns that these bombings have not affected the supply or price of this narcotic and have led criminal groups to develop new strategies and tactics to transport drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drug traffickers have reportedly stopped using speedboats in their operations, which now avoid international waters, to opt for larger vessels and routes close to the coasts, where there is a lower probability of being attacked by the Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the newspaper, Pentagon officials informed lawmakers in a closed-door briefing that the attacks “had not reduced the purity of the drug.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of boats, drug traffickers have increased the use of aircraft from clandestine airstrips on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, heading east, passing through Guyana and Suriname, in order to evade U.S. forces, according to the DEA assessment reported by the Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When you squeeze a balloon on one side, it always expands on the other. They always find the weak points and exploit them,” a DEA official told the newspaper on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States “Southern Spear” operation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The administration of President Donald Trump began in September 2025 the operation \u2018Southern Spear\u2019 against drug trafficking, first in Caribbean waters and later in the eastern Pacific, as a regional offensive against drug trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This operation also aimed to increase pressure on the deposed Venezuelan president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, before U.S. forces arrested him in Caracas and transferred him to a detention center in New York in early January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told the Post that \u2018Southern Spear\u2019 was achieving its purpose and that \u201ctransnational criminal organizations have continuously adapted their tactics\u201d for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That does not indicate that the pressure is ineffective. It shows that we are imposing systemic friction on their operations,” he added.
So far, the U.S. has attacked 67 vessels and caused the deaths of 221 people, according to media tallies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations and human rights organizations have described these attacks as “extrajudicial executions” and have reported that the victims include fishermen and fuel smugglers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
