The United States and Saudi Arabia carried out precision strikes<\/strong> on July 28 against pro-Iranian militia positions in eastern Iraq, in response to more than 30 drone attacks directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)<\/strong> in the last 72 hours, according to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Fighter jets from both nations struck multiple logistics facilities and weapons depots throughout eastern Iraq. CENTCOM specified that the drone attacks against U.S. forces did not achieve their objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense confirmed the attacks following drone strikes against Saudi oil facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Spokesman Turki al-Maliki referred to two previous statements, from Monday and Tuesday, in which the ministry indicated that air defenses had intercepted drones targeting oil facilities in the eastern and Riyadh<\/strong> regions, in attacks that, according to the ministry, were launched from Iraqi territory by Iranian-backed militias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between February and April 2026, more than 600 attempted attacks against U.S. citizens and facilities by Iran-aligned militias in Iraq were recorded, according to the same statement. The joint operation on July 28 represents the most direct military response to date. The agency warned that the IRGC and its \u201cproxy terrorist groups must cease these attacks to avoid further U.S. military response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours before the attacks, the spokesperson for the Saudi Ministry of Defense, General Turki al Maliki<\/strong>, announced that the kingdom’s air defenses intercepted and destroyed several drones attempting to attack oil facilities in the country’s eastern region. Al Maliki described the incidents as \u201cterrorist attempts\u201d and attributed the launches to \u201cIran-aligned terrorist militias\u201d operating from Iraqi territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, the Saudi ministry had reported that the drones intercepted that day were targeting oil facilities in the Eastern Province and in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia reserved, according to Al Maliki, \u201cthe right to respond at the appropriate time and place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al Zaidi<\/strong> ordered security agencies on Monday to investigate Saudi allegations following the first incident. His office stated that the government \u201cwill examine the available evidence and information and will take legal action against those found to be involved.\u201d Al Zaidi reaffirmed Baghdad’s commitment to \u201cpreventing Iraqi soil from being used as a route or starting point for any attack against brotherly or friendly countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iraq is home to dozens of pro-Iranian Shiite militias that, despite being formally integrated into the Iraqi Armed Forces, act autonomously in favor of Tehran’s interests. These groups have intensified their operations since the start of the war in Iran at the end of February, attacking Persian Gulf countries and U.S. positions in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with pressure from Washington, the Iraqi government began a disarmament process for these militias that is currently stalled and is due to conclude at the end of September.
