Tegucigalpa.-<\/em><\/strong> Six members of a family, five of them minors, died this Wednesday when their home, located in an extreme poverty neighborhood in the city of San Pedro Sula, northern Honduras, caught fire, with the causes of the incident currently unknown, reported the city’s mayor, Roberto Contreras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to preliminary information from the Fire Department<\/a>, the victims were a 19-year-old woman, her six-month-old son, and her four siblings aged 17, 10, 7, and 6, who were unable to escape the humble wooden home when the flames spread due to causes that are still under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firefighters received the alert about the fire around 3:00 local time (9:00 GMT) and, upon arriving at the scene, rescue teams had difficulty entering due to the intensity of the fire, which was subsequently brought under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bodies of the six victims were transported to the Forensic Medicine headquarters of the Public Ministry in San Pedro Sula, the second most important city in Honduras, where autopsies will be performed on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities have opened an investigation to establish the origin of the fire and determine if there were factors that contributed to the tragedy, which was recorded on the outskirts of the Esquipulas 2 neighborhood, an area of extreme poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Honduras, many homes have electrical installations that do not meet basic safety conditions, which sometimes causes overheating in the electrical wiring that leads to short circuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
