A parasitic outbreak causing severe diarrhea has led many consumers in the United States to avoid some fast-food and salad chains while reducing purchases of fresh lettuce, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked the outbreak of cyclosporiasis to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from central Mexico. The company said it has removed potentially affected products from the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Customer traffic declined at several restaurant chains following reports of the outbreak. According to the data, visits to Taco Bell fell every day after July 13 and were down 20.8% on July 23 compared with the average over the previous six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other chains also saw fewer customers on July 23, including Chopt, where visits dropped 12.2%, Chipotle Mexican Grill, down 1.4%, and Panera Bread, down 3.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, market research firm NielsenIQ reported that sales of fresh lettuce fell 9% in the week ending July 18 compared with the previous week and were down 19% from two weeks earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
