Athens.-<\/em><\/strong> Two firefighters lost their lives this Wednesday while participating in firefighting efforts for a forest fire on the Greek island of Crete, in the eastern Mediterranean, the Fire Department confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“During a forest fire extinguishing operation in the Krya Vrysi area, in Rethymno (Crete region), two firefighters have lost their lives,” the Fire Department stated in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They fell heroically in the line of duty to protect the lives and property of citizens, as well as the environment,”<\/em><\/strong> he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’, the two men were permanent non-commissioned officers of the Fire Department and were serving in the brigade of the Cretan town of Agia Fotini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some media outlets claim that the two officers were found charred next to their vehicle; however, the local news portal Creta Neakriti indicates that the vehicle was found overturned and not burned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities are investigating the causes of what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, more than 150 firefighters with 27 trucks, four helicopters, and four air tankers are operating in the area to contain the flames, amidst strong winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire broke out this Wednesday near the town of Kria Vrisi, located in the center of the island, a few kilometers north of its southern coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong northerly winds caused the flames to spread rapidly to the south, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of six towns with about 1,000 permanent residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, another hundred firefighters are operating at two fires declared this Wednesday on the Greek island of Lesbos, in the eastern Aegean, and in the region of Gytheio, on the Peloponnese peninsula (southern Greece).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Lesbos and Crete are at “very high risk” of forest fires this Wednesday (the third level on a four-level scale) due to strong winds and high temperatures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
