Haiti has recorded more than 5,500 cases of gender-based violence in the first half of this year, the majority being rapes of women and girls, the UN reported this Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Immersed in a deep political, social, and economic crisis, Haiti suffers from the violence of powerful gangs that engage in committing murders, rapes, looting, and kidnappings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities recorded more than 1,000 cases of gender-based violence in June alone. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq warned of an “alarming increase” in these types of assaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the more than 5,500 sexual assaults recorded in the first half of this year, more than 3,000 took place between April and June, he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around 70% of the sexual violence cases recorded in the first half of 2026 were rapes, many of these perpetrated by gangs of armed men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
