Washington.-<\/strong> U.S. President Donald Trump stated this Wednesday that British Prime Minister Andy Burnham conveyed his intention to allow oil exploration in the North Sea, one of the main demands that the president had made for months to his predecessor, Keir Starmer, to boost the British economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He said something very good. He said he is going to open up North Sea oil exploration. If they do that, they will be a rich country again,” the president declared at the White House when asked if he had spoken with Burnham and if he believes he is the right person to lead the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president assured that he had already tried to convince Starmer to make that decision, but, as he said, “he was not able to.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In (the United Kingdom) they have two problems. They have a huge immigration problem: people arriving from all over the world and simply setting up camp in the country. Also an energy problem. They have wind turbines everywhere,” he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his view, the British commitment to wind energy is a sign of “a country in decline.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK-US Relationship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Trump insisted that the North Sea is home to some of the world’s “most valuable” oil deposits and pointed especially to the area near Aberdeen, in Scotland, which for decades was considered the oil capital of Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president also compared British energy policy with that of Norway, a country that, according to Trump, has accumulated great wealth thanks to the exploitation of its oil resources in that sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statements come after Trump reported a phone conversation last week with Burnham in which they discussed, among other issues, North Sea oil or the demining of the Strait of Hormuz, and after which he guaranteed that they will meet soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Starmer’s resignation, Burnham took office last Monday as the seventh UK Chief Executive in the last decade with the promise to alleviate the cost of living and to fulfill defense commitments to London’s partners, which has Washington as its main military ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
