Miami<\/strong>.- Journalists Daniel Coronell, from Colombia; Leila Guerriero, from Argentina, and Luz Mely Reyes, from Venezuela, received recognition this Wednesday with the Maria Moors Cabot Gold Medals 2026 from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism for their careers and coverage of the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with them, they also awarded American journalist Kate Linthicum, from the Los Angeles Times, in one of the oldest international journalism awards, as detailed by the university in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coronell, former president of Univision News, is recognized for his four-decade career in investigative journalism, during which he has covered political violence, human rights violations, and corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university details that his work in Colombia earned him persecution and death threats that led him into exile in the United States, where he has documented abuses against the Hispanic community in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guerriero, one of the most influential voices in Spanish-language narrative journalism, was honored for her three-decade career and for chronicles and profiles that address historical memory, inequality, and violence in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has also trained new generations of chroniclers in the region and Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reyes, a journalist and co-founder of the Venezuelan media outlet Efecto Cocuyo, received the award for her coverage of Chavismo, Venezuelan migration, and restrictions on freedom of expression. After years of threats due to her work, she went into exile in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jury also granted special mentions to the Spaniard Jan Mart\u00ednez Ahrens, director of El Pa\u00eds; to the American David Brooks, correspondent for La Jornada in the United States, and to the Argentine-American Ricardo Trotti, who held leadership positions at the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) for 31 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabot Prizes, established in 1938, recognize journalistic excellence and coverage in the Americas that contributes to inter-American understanding, the statement detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
