Sydney.-<\/strong> The Australian internet safety regulator, eSafety, initiated a civil proceeding<\/a> this Thursday before the Federal Court against the messaging service Telegram for alleged breaches of Australian law by failing to diligently detect and remove terrorist propaganda content and other illicit materials from the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by eSafety in a statement, the investigation, which lasted for a year, concluded that the messaging service allegedly failed to comply with the obligations set out in the Australian Online Safety Act by allowing videos of executions attributed to terrorist groups to remain accessible for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the reported content are recordings of attacks such as the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings (New Zealand) or the 2022 Buffalo mass shooting (United States), even after Australian users filed complaints against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the lawsuit succeeds, Telegram could face civil penalties of up to 54.6 million Australian dollars (about 33.18 million euros).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accusations against Telegram<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The organization also accuses Telegram, founded in 2013 in Russia, of failing to take sufficient measures to prevent recidivism, such as closing accounts, channels, and groups that disseminated such material; not having terms of use that expressly prohibited this type of content in all areas of the platform; and not informing complainants about the outcome of their claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, stated -in the text- that the continued dissemination of terrorist and violent extremist content “normalizes extremism,” facilitates radicalization, and poses a risk to the Australian community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No platform is above the law,” the official noted, stressing that Telegram, with more than a billion users worldwide and about 1.5 million monthly visits in Australia, has a responsibility to prevent the dissemination and amplification of that type of material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inman Grant also alluded to the terrorist attack recorded last December at Bondi Beach, in Sydney, against an event organized by the Jewish community, and stated that, with its aftermath “still present” and a terrorist threat level that in Australia “remains probable,” it is “more important than ever that digital platforms comply with their obligations to protect the community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action taken by Australia comes just one day after Russia also intensified its pressure on the platform and one of its founders, Pavel Durov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
