Bogot\u00e1.-<\/em><\/strong> Colombian authorities <\/a>captured five people allegedly involved in the murder of Mar\u00eda Camila Potos\u00ed, the 21-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant and murdered in Cali (southwest), a case that shocked the country after it was revealed that the body was missing the baby she was expecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by the Prosecutor’s Office, “the alleged suspects were captured in search and raid proceedings carried out in Cali and Tulu\u00e1”,<\/em><\/strong> in the department of Valle del Cauca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entity specified that several cell phones and a motorcycle were seized during the operations, which are presumed to have been used in the crime against the young woman who disappeared on July 16, after leaving a relative’s house in Cali and boarding a motorcycle driven by a woman, as recorded on a security camera video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mayor of Cali, Alejandro Eder, reacted to the capture of those involved, whose identities have not yet been revealed by the Prosecutor’s Office, and stated that “no woman should be a victim of violence and no crime like this can be normalized or go unpunished.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We said it from day one and we are fulfilling it: we will not rest until all those responsible answer to justice,” added the local leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Potos\u00ed case has caused dismay in Colombia after the young woman’s mother, Alba Rub\u00ed G\u00f3mez, reported that her daughter’s body, found four days later in a rural area on the outskirts of Cali called La Buitrera, was missing the baby she was expecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When we found her, I swore she had her baby in her womb. At the moment of going to collect her body to bid her a final farewell, I asked about the baby (…) but when I insisted, they told me that unfortunately she did not have the baby,” the woman declared to local media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, who will take office precisely in Cali on August 7th, also condemned this crime and announced that once he assumes power, the slogan and public policy will be to protect women “and subdue anyone who dares to harm them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
